Covid-19 in numbers: Latest data on cases and deaths in India and globally

Here are the key takeaways from the data released by the Union Ministry of and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on Friday (May 29, 2020):

  • With a daily increase of 7,446 in total cases, the biggest single-day jump yet, India’s total tally has risen from 158,333 to 165,799, an increase of 4.7%. Death toll has reached 4,706, with 178 new fatalities being reported on Friday.
  • India’s recovery rate has improved marginally to 42.9%, and death rate to 2.8%.
  • India’s new daily closed cases stand at 3,589 — 175 deaths and 3,414 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 4.9%.
  • India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases has declined to an all-time low of 4.7%.
  • Net daily addition to India’s active cases is 3,877, an increase of 25% from Thursday’s 3,106.
  • India’s doubling time for total cases has reduced from 16.4 days to 15.1 days.
  • The states and UTs that have seen their sharpest single-day spike in total cases are Delhi (1,024), Tamil Nadu (827), Rajasthan (364), Telangana (158), Haryana (123), Kerala (84), Ladakh (20), and Nagaland (14).
  • Maharashtra, the most affected state, has added 2,598 cases to take its tally to 59,546. The state has added more than 2,000 cases on each of the past 12 days. About 48.4% (28,840) of all its cases have come in these 11 days alone.
  • Tamil Nadu, the second-most-affected state, has added 827 cases, 10 more than the previous single-day high reported on Thursday. The state has reported more than 400 cases for a 12th straight day to take its total to 19,372.
  • Delhi has reported an addition of 1,024 cases, its highest ever in a day, to take its tally to 16,281.
  • Gujarat accounts for 9.4% of India’s total cases, but 20.4% of deaths. On Friday, it has reported a net daily addition of 367 cases, its 30th straight daily addition of more than 300 cases.
  • In percentage terms, the highest daily increase in total cases has been reported by Nagaland (350%) Arunachal Pradesh (50%), Ladakh (38%), and Manipur (25%).
